Listen up ladies; let’s have a chat…
Some of you may not like what we are about to say, but someone needs to play devil’s advocate. Truth be told, we want you all to look absolutely GORGEOUS on your wedding day (or just on any normal day), which is why we feel we need to share some home truths. We have never been fans of these beauty trends, which, lets face it. probably should have never begun in the first place – and need to be vanquished FOREVER!
We may not be professional make up artists and everyone is free to do as they wish, but have you ever thought about some of the worlds top artists and why they DON’T use these techniques? We’re talking those artists who have worked with Vogue and the biggest celebrities around, (think Mickey Contractor – Bollywood’s go-to artist, or make up GODDESSES Lisa Eldridge and Mary Greenwell), who are never seen using these techniques, EVER! So this should be telling us all something, no?
1. Extreme Contouring
This beauty trend has definitely out-lived its welcome and it just needs to stop! Make up should be used to highlight and enhance the features you already have, not completely obliterate them. Now we are not saying contouring is all bad but if you want to contour make sure it is done correctly and blended out beautifully with a sheer foundation. Heavy-brown thick lines all over your face are not going to fool anyone. If you want a more youthful look invest in a pretty blush and apply to the apples of your cheeks to achieve a fresh faced finish.
2. Highlight Overload
Stop shinning spotlights on your face with excessive shimmery formulation. If you really want to make your cheekbones and brows pop choose a subtle pink champagne tone (best for fair skin tones) or a rose gold (for medium and darker skin tones) highlighter. Or better still, just skip this step and go for that, ‘I woke up like this’ natural look.
3. Face Baking
Unless you know how to do this properly then we strongly suggest you leave it to the experts. Although face baking has been around for a long time and typically used for drag queens and performers, the technique involves heavy layering of powder to sit on your skin. Admittedly it looks great under heavy stage lighting, but unless you have flawless skin it will only accentuate fine lines or dry skin and will most definitely not look natural up close and personal.
4. Instagram Brows
We’ve all seen the countless posts on Instagram of dark, over-filled, stencilled-on eyebrows that are frightening and flatter no face. If you really want eyebrow perfection, let them grow out and invest your money in a good salon that will shape your brows to their natural form. Use an eye shadow in your correct colour to fill in any sparse areas for a softer natural look. Remember, this feature is so important as it shapes your entire face.
5. Stiletto Nails
Okay, so Beyoncé and Lana Del Rey can pull off the stiletto nails well because lets face it, they are queens. But this is where the trend needs to stop. Girls – put the claws away. Opt for a shape that mimics that of your cuticles in a classic French manicure or a beautiful nude colour to ooze ultimate sophistication and class. Jessica GELeration is a great treatment on your own nails that we recommend to all our clients. Not only is it gentle on your nails, it protects them as they grow and can last up to four weeks chipped free.
6. Overdrawn Lips
Kylie Jenner has a lot to answer for when it comes to this trend. Embrace what you’ve been given and leave behind those lips that will only make way for name calling like duck or trout pout. Work with colours that suit your skin tone. A little over lining is fine with a pop of gloss but keep your lips as natural as possible.
7. Unnatural Fake Lashes
There’s nothing attractive about super fake lashes that do not blend in with your natural ones. Believe us when we say go for semi permanent individual lash treatments. Yes, it may be more expensive but they will be worth it in the end. They can last up to eight to twelve weeks and you’ll achieve a much thicker, fuller and more flattering look.
Let’s restart the year where these trends disappear and never return, ever!
